Traditionally the inhabitants of Maastricht have a strong devotion for the virgin Mary, Star of the Sea.

A must-see.

The beautifull basilica of Our Lady is a must see for every visitor of Maastricht. It is an iconic building with robust walls, little windows and roman architecture. Because of its authentic character, you will experience the church almost the same way as people did in the 12th century.

Basilica of Our Lady

History.

This church was built where once a roman shrine dedicated to Jupiter existed . In the 4th or 5th century the church became cathedral of the region of Tongeren and Maastricht. However, the building as we can see it nowadays, was constructed during the 11th and 12th centuries. The Gothic vaults were added to the nave in the 13th century.

In 1794 Maastricht was under the control of the French First Republic. As consequence, all churches and religious buildings where closed. During this period, many religious ornaments and objects of the Basilica were lost. Furthermore, the church served as a blacksmith shop and stables during the military occupation.

Star of the sea

The well know Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers restored the church into his original Romanesque style. In order to achieve this, it was necessary to almost rebuilt the east choir, the two choir towers, and the south aisle.

Star of the Sea

On February 20th 1933, Pope Pius XI granted the title to minor basilica.

Chapel.

The statue of Our Lady Star of the Sea dates from the 15th century. Since 1903, it was given a honouring place in the Gothic chapel located at the entrance.

International Mass.

Maastricht is a city with many foreigners. People of many nations stay for a while or even live permanently in the area. In order to serve the catholics among them, there is a weekly International (English) Mass every Saturday at 17.00 h. in the Crypt of the Basilica.
